Building Sustainable Futures, Together

RW Rockshell Builders International: Democratizing Sustainable Construction Through Tools, Systems & Community

Our Mission

To make sustainable living accessible to everyone by providing engineered tool systems, prefabricated components, and community resources that enable individuals, families, and cooperatives to build their own resilient homesteads and living structures.

We believe that the most sustainable future is one that people build for themselves, with their own hands, in their own communities.

Our Story

RW Rockshell Builders International began with a simple observation: sustainable construction knowledge exists, but the tools and systems to implement it are often inaccessible to ordinary people.

While working on construction projects in Wisconsin and studying historical engineering archives, we noticed that many proven, durable building methods—earthbag construction, straw bale building, timber framing, passive solar design—were well-documented but difficult to implement without specialized equipment or extensive training.

We asked: “What if we could systemize these methods? What if we could create tool kits that make sustainable building as straightforward as assembling furniture? What if communities could share resources and build together more efficiently?”

From these questions emerged our core philosophy: innovation doesn’t mean reinventing—it means making what already works accessible, efficient, and scalable.

Our Approach: The Three Pillars

1. Tool Systemization

We analyze proven construction methods and break them down into repeatable, tool-assisted processes. Instead of requiring years of apprenticeship, our systems enable capable DIYers to achieve professional-quality results.

  • Complete tool kits for specific techniques
  • Step-by-step measurement and layout systems
  • Specialized equipment for sustainable materials
  • Safety-integrated workflow design

2. Prefabricated Simplicity

Where appropriate, we provide pre-engineered components that reduce on-site complexity while maintaining design flexibility and sustainability standards.

  • Modular wall and roof systems
  • Integrated renewable energy packages
  • Pre-cut timber framing components
  • Customizable foundation solutions

3. Community Scaling

We design for cooperative implementation—systems that work better when communities build together, sharing tools, knowledge, and labor.

  • Tool libraries and equipment sharing models
  • Bulk material purchasing programs
  • Community skill development workshops
  • Cooperative ownership frameworks

Why Cooperative Models Matter

We’ve seen that sustainable building achieves its full potential in community contexts. When neighbors build together, they can:

  • Share expensive equipment that would be unaffordable individually
  • Pool diverse skills—carpentry, plumbing, electrical, gardening
  • Create shared facilities like workshops, tool libraries, and processing centers
  • Develop local economies based on mutual support rather than extraction
  • Build social resilience alongside physical infrastructure

Our cooperative development resources help communities navigate the practical, legal, and social aspects of building together—because the most sustainable structures are those built by connected communities.

Our Values

Durability First

We prioritize materials and methods that last generations, not just decades. Our designs emphasize maintainability, repairability, and adaptive reuse.

Accessibility

Sustainability shouldn’t be a luxury. We work to make our systems financially and technically accessible to diverse communities.

Transparency

We document our methods openly, share our learning, and acknowledge both successes and failures in our development process.

Community Focus

We measure success by community outcomes—not just structures built, but skills gained, relationships formed, and local resilience strengthened.

Environmental Stewardship

Every design decision considers full lifecycle impact—from material sourcing through construction, use, and eventual decommissioning or reuse.

Practical Innovation

We value solutions that work in real-world conditions with real people, real budgets, and real constraints.

Our Team & Network

RW Rockshell Builders International brings together:

  • Construction professionals with decades of hands-on building experience
  • Engineers and designers specializing in sustainable systems
  • Community organizers experienced in cooperative development
  • Historical researchers studying proven traditional methods
  • Manufacturing partners committed to ethical production
  • A growing community of builders, homesteaders, and cooperators testing and improving our systems

We’re based in Wisconsin but work with partners and communities across North America and internationally. Our approach is rooted in local adaptation—we help communities apply principles to their specific climates, materials, and cultural contexts.
